BEFORE LEAVING HOME
- Equipment is in 100% working order.
- Gear is packed securely on the car or trailer.
- Sailing bag is packed and includes wetsuit, towel, sunscreen, food, drink sailing instructions and any necessary race registration information.
- Toolbox is packed and includes screwdrivers, emergency repair kit, shackle key, spare rope, spare parts etc.
- Make sure you leave with plenty of time to spare.
ARRIVAL AT THE RACE VENUE
- Check briefing and race times.
- Check weather conditions and local forecast.
- Register and sign on if necessary.
GETTING READY
- Rig equipment.
- If possible go for a test sail to check that everything is working well.
- While on your test sail check out the course and the local wind conditions.
- Check that it is rigged properly – go over every part of the rig and board and check that it is in working order including downhaul, outhaul, battens, mast base, centreboard, fin, mast track, footstraps, boom and buoyancy vest
- Attend the briefing check the course, start times, buoy rounding’s and start procedure.
- Check your watched is synchronised with the start committee
ON THE WATER
- Check out the course and local wind conditions. Where are the gusts and lifts?
- Check out the start line – is there a favoured end and find a line transit point.
- Listen for the start sequence and set your watch.
BACK ON LAND
- Sign off.
- Re-hydrate.
- Review the days racing in your mind to see where you went wrong and how you could improve it next time.
- Pack gear.
